A-Mah and I (亞嫲和我) attempts to connect with my late grandmother through Gong Fu Cha – a mindful, Teochew brewing technique for tea which has existed for over 350 years.
My late A-Mah was a single mother who worked tirelessly to sustain her eight children. She had little time or means to engage in the pastime of Gong Fu Cha.
This installation of a miniature, handbuilt tea set in a domestic shrine invokes a transcendent ritual of Gong Fu Cha between A-Mah (who can now rest) and myself. It speaks to the chasm of unknown histories experienced by second generationers investigating their family’s migratory history.
